Frequently Asked Questions

General

Why don't you let me post my check ins to Twitter?
We're all about privacy here at Rally Up and the goal is to help you connect and spend time with your Real Friends. There are always exceptions, but generally, the people you're friends with on Twitter are not the same people that you see every single day. Additionally, while you may have a few real friends on Twitter, most people have a lot more that are not. Once something is posted on Twitter, it's out there for all your followers to see and there's no granular control which kind of goes against what we're trying to do with Rally Up.
But you let me post to Facebook, isn't that the same thing?
You caught us! Really though, Facebook and Twitter are very different beasts. The main difference is that Twitter, by default, is entirely public and Facebook, by default, is private. Facebook also has the granular controls to let you control exactly who gets to see what, should you choose to use it. Additionally, the friends you have on Facebook tend to be people you have met in person and actually know, more so than on Twitter. Of course, there are always exceptions and this model doesn't work for everyone, but we think we have a good balance between usability and privacy.
I found a bug in the app! How can I tell you about it?
Oh no! We're sorry! Please let us know though, just shoot us an e-mail and we'll get right on fixing it for our next update. Tell us your username and what kind of device you're on (iPhone/iPod/iPad) as well as the steps you took to create the bug and any errors that may have appeared.
I don't have an iPhone! When will you have an app for Android/BlackBerry/Palm/Nokia?
We're working on expanding to more platforms and we hope to have news for you soon!
A location is spelled wrong, is in the wrong place, or is categorized incorrectly. How can I fix it?
We're working on ways for users to alert us and make these changes automatically. In the mean time, you can always e-mail us with any corrections to any location. Please be specific as possible in your request - and make sure you tell us the name and location (city/state/province/country) for the location you're talking about as we have millions across the globe.
I can't find a category for a location I'm adding, can you add a category for _______?
Yes! We'd be happy to. E-mail us and give us your suggestion for a new category. We'll add it right in.

Accounts

How do I change my password? What happens if I forgot my password?
For either situation, please click the Lost Password link found at the top right of the site. You'll be asked to enter either your username or your e-mail address. Once you do that, we'll e-mail you a link you can use to either change or reset your password.
How do I delete my account?
We're working on automating this process, but for now, you'll need to e-mail us from the e-mail account that you have on file in your account requesting an account deletion. Please also remember to give us your username as well. Upon receipt of your e-mail, account deletions will happen within 1 business day.

Privacy

What is your "friend slider" and how does it protect my privacy?
We're glad you asked! The friend slider is a super easy way to adjust who can see your check ins as well as what check ins you see of everyone else. We've got 4 different modes (real, feed, lurk, mute) to choose from and each one controls the content you send out and the content you recieve. Let's go through each one...

Real - Use this for your Real Friends. If it's set to Real, your friend will be able to see where you check in and you'll also see all of their check ins. Additionally, you'll get a push notification (like a text message, but free) on your iPhone alerting you the instant your friend checks in anywhere.

Feed - Same as Real, except you won't get a push notification every time your friend checks in. This is great for someone who you want to keep up with, but maybe don't need to know their every move immediately. It also works well for your freinds who maybe go a little overboard and check in 1,000 times a day and you just want to keep your sanity by not having to look at your phone every 10 seconds.

Lurk - If you're feeling a little shy or just don't want someone to be able to see where you're at, this is the option for you. If a user is set to Lurk, you'll still be able to see that person's check ins in your feed, but they won't see your activity.

Mute - We all know how it is, you get a friend request and you feel pressured to accept even though you really don't want to. Maybe it's an old aquantance or someone from the office. Well, that's no longer a problem - we feel your pain and want to make sure you can keep Rally Up just for your Real Friends without offending anyone. Just accept the request, and then mute! You won't see anything in your feed from your muted friend, and they won't see anything of yours either.
How do privacy settings take effect? If I just want to stop updates to one person for a weekend in Vegas, for example, is that possible?
Yes! All privacy settings that are in effect when you check in are always in effect for that check in. So, let's say you're on your way to Vegas for the weekend and you want to check in all around town with your friends that are coming with you, but want to make sure your boyfriend and sisters back home don't see what you're up to. Before you head out, just set anyone you want to "lurk" and you'll be able to keep tabs on them even though they will have no idea what you're up to. When you get back, just set them all back to their normal settings. They will start to see your updates again, but your check ins over the weekend in Vegas will remain hidden.
As your service grows and everyone starts to get on Rally Up, won't you just have the same problem everyone else has with too many non-real friends?
We don't think so. We've been focused on privacy from day one and we give you features to control your privacy easily. While you may have a bunch of non-real friends in the app, you've set them all to Mute, so they aren't cluttering your feed, creating unwanted noise, or able to see what you are doing. Using our granular privacy controls allows Rally Up to grow while you still remain in control.
